VW Bug Owner Slacking off Restoration

001

That’s me. Guilty as charged. For the past several month’s I have slacked off restoring our 71 Super Beetle for one reason or another. The last significant thing I did was pull the engine out last September. Still it sits on the garage floor. I did get a stand and got VW adapter to mount it on the stand. Fighting cold weather, procrastination, leaky garage roof, lack of funds or whatever I know I must battle through this to complete this project. I’ve also considered finding another 71 Super and using this for parts so nothings out of the question at this point. Anyway I thought I’d go through and identify the current situation. That way I can perhaps get a better picture where I am at and then plan out the the next steps.

Current Status:

Engine: Is out  and on the floor. Need to get it on the engine mount. Needed for next action:

  • Drill holes for engine mount adapter.
  • Obtain engine lift to lift and mount on stand
  • Clean engine and then begin disassembly,

Body: Fenders and bumpers are off. Ultimately I will most likely need to lift body off the chassis. This will be needed to properly repair the chassis and floor-pans from extensive rust damage. Will need to build body stands like seen in Bug Me Video’s (and others).

Outlook: I’m looking to obtain an engine lift from Harbor freight very soon, My brother said he’d go in half with me so it kind of lessens the financial blow. He also has a drill press to help me with the engine mount adapter. Hoping that spring will start creepy around to enable me to be out there more often. Also must see about fixing the leaky garage roof which doesn’t help along with a garage door needing repair. I’m hoping this post will help me sort through the things I’ve been thinking about regarding this. Unfortunately it seems to be one of those projects that the more dig deeper the more challenges that arise. I’ll just have to keep plugging away at it. If you actually read all the way to here listening to my ramblings then thanks and I hope to have more to report very soon.
